CAHS accepts only owner-surrendered animals. According to Michigan law, a stray animal must be surrendered to the Animal Control agency for the county in which the animal was found. This gives the animal the best chance to be reunited with its owner. Further, it is a misdemeanor to keep a stray animal without notifying Animal Control.
Upon surrendering a stray to Animal Control, you may leave your name and phone number to be contacted if the stray you found is not claimed by its owner. If Animal Control is unable to place the animal, it is possible for you to adopt the animal if you desire.
If you find a stray animal with a rabies tag, you may call the veterinarian noted on the tag to trace the tag number to the animal's owner.
If you find a stray animal with a tag identifying that the animal has an ID microchip implant, you may take the animal to CAHS or any Animal Control agency with a scanner to trace the owner.
If you find a stray animal with a CAHS tag (indicating the animal was adopted from the CAHS shelter), call CAHS at 626-6060 to trace the owner.
