Advantages of spaying or neutering
Spaying (females) or neutering (males) your pet is a safe, low-risk operation performed by your veterinarian. While the Capital Area Humane Society requires that pets adopted from its shelter are spayed or neutered no later than four months of age, there are also many benefits to you as a pet owner by having the operation done.
- The risk of your pet contracting diseases like cancer is greatly reduced.
- Your pet's personality becomes more consistent, creating better relationships with strangers and children.
- Your pet is better behaved and more content.
- Your pet will be less aggressive toward other animals.
- The urge for wandering (and escaping from your house) is curbed.
- No messy heat cycles for female pets.
- Prevented litters mean money saved and no hassle in finding homes.
- Dogs used for hunting, police work, etc. keep their attention on their work.
- Annoying male suitors who sense a female's heat cycle will stay away.
- A male dog is less likely to "mount" furniture or a visitor's leg.
- Your pet will be easier to train.
- Your pet will live a longer life, providing companionship for many more years.
Myths Associated with Spaying or Neutering Animals are Just Not True:
- Spaying or neutering will not cause your animal to gain weight. Too much food and too little exercise causes weight gain.
- You are not depriving your pet of his or her natural right to mate. Altered animals do not have the urge to mate and reproduce.
- It is not healthier for females to have one litter before being spayed. They should be spayed before their first heat cycle. Spayed animals never miss the experience of breeding or giving birth.
- The surgery itself is not expensive. It is a one-time investment which prevent future, more-costly medical bills.
- The surgery is not painful for the animal, who is under anesthesia during the operation. After surgery, your veterinarian will ensure your pet's recovery will be as painless as possible.
